Natania Wolansky

Thanks for visiting my site!  I'm Natania, an engineer by day, self-taught painter by night.  I work in acrylics and oil, on canvas and dried gourd -- all from my Brooklyn, NY apartment.  Through my use of color, pattern and expression, I create portraits with a sense of humor and whimsy.  I'm interested in images which are not quite photorealism, not quite abstract -- where decorative motifs go hand in hand with detailed figurative elements, united by bold and vibrant color.

I come from three generations of gourd-painting women.  While my practice has moved more towards canvas, I love that painting allows me to feel a sense of connection with my mom and grandmother, whose works draw on the images and patterns seen through their passion for worldwide travel.   Through my own work, I hope to capture that same feeling of joy and warmth.
